Bitget Reports $351.6M Wallet Breach
CW 39 Bitget reported a $351.6M breach affecting some hot and warm wallets, while customer balances remain covered. Binance expanded tokenized stock functions and account migration plans. Separately, Binance invested $100M in Circle and renewed its USDC partnership for five years.
Bitget hot and warm wallets hacked for $351.6 million
Bitget has confirmed that roughly $351.6 million was moved out of some of its hot and warm wallets in an unauthorized transfer detected at 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026, the largest confirmed crypto exchange breach of the year. The exchange operates a three-tier wallet architecture and said the breach was contained to portions of the hot and warm layers, with cold wallets fully secure and customer balances still reflected accurately.
Bitget suspended withdrawals as a precaution while its security review continues, although deposits and trading remain fully operational. CEO Gracy Chen said the loss falls within Bitget's User Protection Fund, which holds more than $464 million and is enough to cover it in full. Abnormal recipient addresses were identified, flagged and reported, and law enforcement agencies and on-chain security firms have been engaged to trace the funds.
Chen said preliminary evidence pointed to infrastructure resembling a North Korean threat group, echoing the Lazarus Group playbook, but Bitget has not confirmed attribution and said it will not speculate on the attack vector until the investigation is complete. A full incident report is expected within 24 hours of the breach.

Binance enhancing stock functions
Binance is pushing deeper into tokenized equities with two coordinated changes. The exchange has extended bStocks margin collateral eligibility to all eligible users, opening the feature well beyond the VIP 3-and-above tier it had previously been limited to. Supported tokenized stock assets can now be used as collateral across Cross Margin and Portfolio Margin accounts, subject to applicable haircuts, collateral ratios and regulatory requirements. bStocks are tokenized securities designed to track publicly listed stocks and ETFs, fully backed and freely convertible 1:1 to the corresponding underlying asset; since their June 2026 launch, cumulative trading volume has surpassed $30 billion in under 90 days.

Alongside this, Binance will migrate users' crypto assets from Funding Accounts to Spot Accounts starting 2026-09-29, a process expected to continue until January 2027. From that date Funding Accounts will no longer support on-chain deposits, and only six settlement assets — USD, USDC, USDT, USD1, U and BNB — can be used for stock and stock-options trading. Once the migration completes, Funding Accounts will be renamed Stocks Account and reserved for stock and stock-options settlement, while deposits and withdrawals for other crypto tokens will be supported exclusively through Spot Accounts. A "One-Click Migration" button will let users move balances proactively, with unmigrated assets transferred automatically in batches from January 2027. Binance says users' aggregate asset balances and the safety of funds will not be affected.

Binance invests $100M in Circle and renews USDC partnership for 5 years
Binance has invested $100 million in Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) through a private placement priced at a 5% discount to the market price of CRCL, and expanded and renewed its strategic partnership with the stablecoin issuer for a new five-year term.
Under the agreement, Binance will promote USDC across its global platform, especially in emerging markets, while Circle will continue to provide the infrastructure that supports holding and using the stablecoin. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng described the investment and five-year commitment as "long-duration conviction", adding that a stable, trusted digital dollar should be available to anyone with a phone. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said the partnership would leverage USDC to expand dollar access and support savings and investment through digital asset products in global emerging markets.
